My bredren asked me what I ment by civic dis-engagement the other day. As I spit out a wordy, long winded answer I realized the concept needed to be more normalized among the folks in my circle if I ever wanted to see it catch on as a “buzz” word, and more importantly as an action. Which I do. So here you go:
It is undeniable that we live in a society, local and global, that is being controlled by a very small group of cold hearted individuals via the tools of capitalism, imperialism, white supremacy, patriarchy etc. They intend on maintaining a power structure in which they are your God, forever. They have effectively become a middle man between you and everything you need to survive. Don’t believe me? Food, clothing, shelter… How is it that you currently recieve all three, specifically? Where do you go to get these things? Who do you pay? Who ultimately benefits?
The state acting as a middle man is so normalized to us, that we even see them as the intermediary between us and change. How many times have you heard some clown say “If you don’t like the way things are, make sure you get out and vote”… Yes, make sure you take advantage of the one day in a four year period that the government set aside for you to choose between 3 rich white men debating about how to spend your tax money…*blank stare*. Since this “country’s” inception there has never been a drastic transformation in the systemic process that governs our life. Yet we keep marching to the poles like sheep, waiting for a savior. If we’re not voting, we’re protesting and “occupying” state property demanding things; asking an entity interested in our exploitation and extermination for better jobs, better health care, and more compassionate policing. THIS IS MADNESS!!
There is no savior other than you! This system is functioning like a well oiled machine, according to plan. Wake up! We see no change because those in control have us where they want us. There will be no change until we exercise our own power! Real power, not checking a ballot box or raising a placard.
If this system is functioning like a well oiled machine in the eyes of its creators, than you are the gasoline. You are the battery. You are the one that makes it so, not them. How? You work, you buy, you rent. You eat, sleep and shit on their terms. This system can only exist with your energy and your sanction. Think about it…
Now lets just say we started to systematically remove that energy and sanction. Let’s say we started to systematically eliminate the state as an intermediary between us and the essentials of life: Food, clothing, shelter. Don’t get me wrong, this is not an easy or short process. But if we start putting as much energy as we possibly can into self-determined activities that build the strength and capacity of community resources without any state influence or funding, we will move towards building sustainable community institutions.
This process would start by MASS CIVIC DIS ENGAGEMENT. We’d stop voting, and consuming, and protesting, and putting our children into the school systems. We’d quit many of our jobs and start businesses that provided a needed resource to the community, then we’d barter the goods we create with eachother rather than use the illusion of the monetary system. We’d leave the cities, and plant food, and build homes. We’d make clothing. We’d create small educational networks for our children and socialize them in a new way. Life, FOR US BY US.
I realize this all sounds very idealistic, and you might be thinking im delusional right now. This process could take many many many years to complete….BUT WE CAN START NOW. Baby steps.. First we need to shift our consciousness and overstand our power. Then we can slowly start to dis engage…and never look back.
